What is Behind the Concept of Parking a Domain

Parking a domain is the silent player in the lucrative game of domain name purchase. Some of the biggest players recently were enticed out to an auction in Manhattan where some of the most lucrative domain names were due to be auctioned off to the highest bidder – and some of these bids had to be quite large to compete. At the present time domain names are regarded by industry leaders as essential commodities in the race to dominate the Web, with names such as ‘sex.com’ being auctioned off not too long ago for £12 million. The exchange in ownership of the domain names auctioned in Manhattan raised $12.4 million. As an example, ‘creditcheck.com’ sold for $3 million. This, however, is just a drop in the ocean of an estimated $4 billion industry.

How Do You Arrange Parking a Domain?
So, what exactly does parking a domain entail? What do you need to do and how can you begin to make money from parking a domain? Basically, you choose a domain parking company, sign up and then choose a template. The advertisements are then generated in accordance with semantic meanings of your domain name. So, if you have a domain name or, even better, if you have a number of domain names, you can sign up for parking a domain and begin to earn money from advertisements. Most domain parking sites are free to sign up, few requiring any minimum commitment on your part.

Some domain names can generate quite a respectable income for the domain owner, while others may cover any out of pocket expenses. Parking a domain and being paid for advertising works by third party advertisers placing advertisements on your website, according to keywords. Your domain name is displayed on the internet and when somebody visits your site they find a page full of related advertisements. If the visitor clicks onto one of these adverts on your webpage you, as the owner, will be paid a percentage, i.e. so much per click – even if the visitor does nothing more than makes that first click.

How to Get a Domain Name
Regardless of which domain parking company you choose, the process is more or less the same. Firstly, choose a company to host your parked domain. There will be a text box for you to complete: here you need to enter the domain name you would like to register. Not only do you need to choose a domain name but a domain extension as well. This extension is the ‘.com’ or ‘.info’ etc that comes after your chosen name. The most valuable extensions, if you intend to sell your domain name at some point in the future, is ‘.com’. However, if you are parking a domain simply for the advertising side of the business, the extension is not particularly important as long as it hasn’t already been taken.

Actually choosing a domain name really is personal choice, although you do need to be aware of keyword optimisation. This is something that often tends not to be so well known amongst individuals new to website development: keyword optimisation is important if you want your web page picked up by the search engines.
