Prescribing a box turtle to fulfill a poodle's maternal instincts was one psychologist who deals with dogs. With regard to his profession, he is very serious about it and so he wrote a book he called understanding your dog. According to the book of this doctor who is both an associate professor of psychology at local university and associate director for research at the local zoo is that animals should be considered as individuals too. Honestly is how he expresses himself despite the fact that people can assume too much.

The husband was not allowed to enter the bedroom by the dog and this was what he said about a young couple. Written in his book was how the dachshund owned by the couple would experience catatonic fits when they fought. Aside from having body language that is human like, dogs develop like young children according to him. He also says dogs, like humans, have different abilities to tolerate closeness.

Considering how dogs usually develop through several stages, the doctor points out that getting a puppy is best done when it is between six and eight weeks old. What is advised is not getting a puppy older than 10 weeks unless you are sure that it has been raised with a lot of people around. One important consideration to make when getting a dog is seeing how it interacts with other puppies. The most outgoing one can easily be the most aggressive so watch out.

Take along an old scarf or a glove, and after he's investigated it, see if he'll have a tug of war. When a puppy is at five or six weeks, there is no need for any discipline training for he will only forget it but he will need some tender loving care as well as an exposure to a number of experiences that will enrich his environment.

A visit to the vet can cause undue trauma for a puppy at eight weeks for there is a sensitive fear period owners should be aware of, according to him. It is by 12 weeks when the dog has become emotionally bonded to his owner and even discipline training will not be able to break his spirit or attachment. In terms of considering breeds of dog, this doctor who holds a veterinary degree and a doctorate in psychology from a London university has differing recommendations depending on the given situations.

It is a wise idea to get a golden retriever considering a family with children in the house, the company of terriers will be enjoyed by young couples, apartment couples however will be happy with a schnauzer, a Yorkshire terrier, or a poodle, older couples will love a Yorkshire terrier, pekingese, or pug. But, he says, you used to be able to tell the temperament of a dog from the breed, now you can't. What he blames for this is less quality in breeding.

He calls them cranks when the dog breeders get together and decide on changes for the standards of breeds. If a person is not aware of the possible results then he should not try and change standards, he said. The need for mandatory testing is being emphasized nowadays in terms of prize dogs before any of them are named the best in the breed. This should be considered to ensure that you do not have a zombie for a winner.
