A smart wedding is one which allows for modification and growth within the people and in the method they express their love.
Pearl S. Buck
What are we have a tendency to to create of the word marriage? Its history shows us a pageant of many completely different meanings over the centuries, and that's simply within the Western world. Marriage was seen as a personal matter, a partnership, a family affair, a means to regulate property or a means to establish alliances between countries. It often gave a person control over his wife and kids and served practical purposes. Romance entered the scene solely during the last century or so. Relying on who was answerable, marriage was sometimes held to be a lifelong commitment or simply dissolved, typically by the husband.
Currently in the United States, wedding means a civil contract between two individuals conveying bound rights and responsibilities. Most religions maintain that wedding was ordained by God as a sacramental union bestowed on one man and one woman instead of by society. Some churches have expanded their view to incorporate gay marriages.
Governments and religions have their own rules about how to start, conduct and finish a marriage and what happens afterward. So how do we tend to untangle these intertwined and contradictory views of marriage? It isn't simply words which confuse matters. Emotions and money any confound our makes an attempt to sort out the issues.
Taking all this into thought, it appears clear to me that wedding has no fastened that means but has evolved for better or worse over the centuries. The current controversy over gay wedding reminds us that marriage is still evolving.
Wedding clearly means that one thing totally different to governments and to churches. In the United States there appears to be general agreement that a wedding ought to be between 2 people although lately not as much agreement regarding whether the two individuals must be of different genders.
Governments and churches typically disagree regarding whether or not divorce should be allowed, how troublesome it should be to obtain and what happens to rights and responsibilities (kids, cash and possessions) after divorce. Civil laws concerning such matters differ among individual states and rules also differ among the various religions. Although the Catholic Church does not recognize divorce, it does allow a wedding to be annulled as if it never materialized if a spouse can establish an impediment to a marriage being thought-about valid in the primary place.
It doesn't appear terribly doubtless to me that each one these competing views can ever be reconciled to the satisfaction of governments and their voters or religions and their adherents any time soon. I marvel whether or not the word wedding could have outlived its usefulness. Could we reach a mutually agreeable resolution by finding new names for what society defines as civil marriage underneath its laws and what religions outline as marriage in terms of their beliefs? Stay tuned to the rumblings of society.
