Interviews in journalism are one of the foremost important and vital activities in the process of gathering information. Each broadcasting and print media rely extensively on interviews to craft a smart story that wets the appetite of the reader.
Interviewing people who are HIV positive or those living with AIDS poses an extra challenge to journalist who must adorn a cloak of sensitivity, whereas being able to interrupt through the silence and taboo in several cultures of brazenly talking about sex. In Zimbabwe plus several cultures, it is a taboo to debate problems of sex and to call them explicitly. Sure words associated with sex like virus and condoms do not exist within the Zimbabwean native languages. Worse still human non-public elements in an Africa context can not be freely and simply mentioned without infringing the taboos.
For a journalist to be recognized and to be respected has to be aware of the cultural factors which will compromise people being open with info that is salient for a good interview. Culture could be a complex and contested phenomenon that can be outlined in an exceedingly multiplicity of ways. While it can be defined as "standard" , that is what individuals do at a given moment. But, on the other hand it can perceived as a "totality of life learned across time and is transmitted from generation to generation."
The complexity of culture will be experienced through the means individuals type and express their sense of identity. As a way of life, it is made from norms and values that informs thought perceptions and behavior.
In many cultures, because of gender roles girls are less eager to speak overtly, or honestly, about the "private", and issues related to sex and sexual behavior. When an interview takes place where each men and girls are gift, ladies can fall silent and leave the discussion to the men.
In an African context a smart lady does not openly reveal her hurts, pain, sexual abuse, violence and denial of sexual rights. Such silence perpetuates the violation of women and different human rights.
Understanding gender role in journalism tells the entire story why ladies might have a tendency to be silent or less forth returning throughout interviews that have to try to to with sex or HIV/AIDS. As a journalist knowing gender relations, culture and social traits that underpin the society your are informing, help all journalist to become higher forearmed and understanding "what's to be said."
Through interviews as a methodology of gathering news info and understanding the complexities of important issues, journalist might begin to uncover the stories of everyday efforts by ladies and men who create tiny call to protect themselves but come back up against obstacles.
In Zimbabwe, several workshops are conducted to educate journalist to be guided by media ethics in their daily basis business. Among the problems that the media associations are reminding journalists is that they must tell the reality, respect the people, protect the source, report objectively and offer their audience the proper to respond.
