You recognize, it's not everyday a fellow like me gets to announce a significant paradigm shift, abundant less concerning diabetes ...or any other medical condition.
You do not recognize what a paradigm shift is? Well, if I discussed events and names like: Gutenberg, Copernicus, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Louis Pasteur, and Werner von Braun ...you'd most likely guess a paradigm shift is major shift in thinking...and you'd be right.
Back within the 1960's, Thomas Kuhn wrote a famous book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. In it, he destroyed the common misconception so many of us have regarding science.
We have a tendency to tend to suppose scientific progress is ushered in by a slow, line upon line, piece by piece development of thought over time.
Thomas Kuhn showed that, traditionally, scientific progress happens in leaps ...and is usually confronted by a struggle with an "previous guard." The previous scientific theorists hold tenaciously to their (typically tenured or profitable) positions and array themselves against the new discovery, attempting to drive it away.
However, the new guard - the new discoverers, inventors, explorers- takes the new discoveries and advances it over the thinking of the old establishment. Rarely is that the previous guard converted to the new patterns of thinking (new discovery). They solely die off. The new position wins by attrition ...truth...and perseverance.
Diabetes: The $132 billion dollar pandemic
Diabetes is on the front fringe of such a paradigm shift.
Diabetes now afflicts over eighteen million Americans. That is double the amount of individuals with diabetes simply since 1991 alone.
Per the CDC, one in each three Americans can develop diabetes in their lifetime. Let that sink in...one in each 3 Americans will develop diabetes in their lifetime.
It is estimated over 40 million Americans can be classified as "pre-diabetes" meaning they need blood sugar levels on top of traditional however still below the kind 2 diagnosis level which helps to outline diabetes.
By anyone's normal that is pandemic (goes way beyond epidemic proportions). The price for this carnage is over $132 BILLION DOLLARS. Therefore much expense, grief and sorrow...and unnecessary.
Diabetes: A mirrored image of our culture.
We are a quick food, sedentary, "get-our-fix-currently" generation. Additional than one in every 2 Americans are overweight. We have a tendency to do not exercise as we tend to should. All of that affects glucose levels. Diabetes may be a lifestyle disease...and we have the lifestyle.
Diabetes: The important announcement
That said, diabetes is a condition that CAN be turned around. Glyconutrition is that the new discovery shaking the medical and scientific worlds. There are four Nobel Prizes and MIT testifying to the fact that glycobiology is one of the ten technologies/discoveries which can form our world.
Glyconutrition is additional than just a promising new treatment for diabetes. Several are beginning to whisper "VICTORY" over diabetes in their approach to disease.
Whether or not that is the case, time can tell.
Oh no... The problem is not a failure of glyconutrition. It is the building block VITAL to healthy cellular perform and it's very very important to the correct functioning of the IMMUNE system. Those are known facts.
Diabetes is an auto-immune disease that means, your body's immune system gets misguided messages. So, it starts attacking the islet cells in the pancreas which produces insulin. Voila...diabetes!
However, the matter is NOT whether glyconutrition very works. Anecdotal evidence (market buzz!) is already overwhelming in favor of glyconutritional therapy for diabetes. As is the professional research.
No...the particular science is NOT the problem. The problem is the old guard again. Thomas Kuhn's book is sort of prophetic. The previous guard, the medical and pharmaceutical institution, just can't accept the findings of (their own) research... "What! A nutrient... to treat diabetes?" "Hogwash," one can nearly hear them say.
Actually, I want they were saying that out loud. The truth is, they solely ignore the issue. You see, an excessive amount of is at stake. Like billions of dollars...uh...a $132 billion dollars. All of that money (browse, "business") disappears if glyconutrition continues to "pan out" the way the analysis shows us. But, for now, the sole factor "panning out" is a diabetes pandemic.
Yet, glyconutrition gets shunned as an official diabetes treatment approach.
A study revealed within the 1997 issue of the Proceedings of the Fisher Institute for Medical Analysis showed that individuals with type one diabetes who were given glyconutrients "...reported a dramatic improvement in their health, as well as a decrease in vision problems, better wound healing, less infections, and lower blood pressure." (Miracle Sugars, by Rita Elkins, M.H., Woodland Publishing, p. 26)
"Glycobiology has achieved important breakthroughs within the medical field, primarily by addressing what might be the greatest plague in health care today -- auto-immune diseases. Multiple sclerosis, arthritis, diabetes, Crohn's disease and colitis are simply some of those diseases." - Dr. Neecie Moore, Ph.D. (cf. Rita Elkins, M.H.
Miracle Sugars, Woodland Publishing, p. 18.)
Additionally, mannose (one glyconutrient) will stimulate the pancreas to produce additional insulin "...thus lowering the quantity of insulin needed to regulate this disease." (Miracle Sugars, p. 27).
Reality Check: The lives of 1 out of every three Americans are affected directly by diabetes and there's a $132 billion dollar diabetes pandemic running amuck in our midst. Therefore, I positive hope this paradigm shift - glyconutrition - gets less opposition from the "powers that be" (the "recent guard"), and is given its rightful place within the sun...soon.
But, with the money being made by the prescribed drugs and their medication, and therefore the astoundingly simplistic view of disease treatment ("Blast that disease with technology and medicine!") it is doubtful if Thomas Kuhn's "paradigm shift" will see any differently for diabetes across the land.
The old guard will attack and ignore the invention - arguably, the best in medical history in over 100 years - and, a la Kuhn, they will merely go the means of the Dodo Bird and diabetes treatment will receive its due.
