What is a girls's centre- The definition is fairly subjective:
- If you are a lady who is abused, a ladies's centre could be a place to search out steering or a respite from life's difficulties.
- If you are a new Canadian, a centre can supply an introduction and warm welcome to your community.
- If you are a senior lady trying to connect with others, a women's centre will give a network of friends.
- If you are a young lady battling body image and vanity problems, it can offer support.
- If you are a mother, a ladies's centre can provide lessons in parenting.
- If you just want someone to talk to, a girls's centre volunteer can listen.
A small sampling of programs from centres across Ontario demonstrates the tremendous diversity of services offered:
- Community Kitchens
- Kitchen Table Literacy
- Women's Business Clothing Project
- Young Girls's Outreach
- Women's Family Law Clinics
- Entrepreneurial Skills Training
- Employment Counseling
- Peer Counseling
Additionally to these core services, that are usually offered at no charge, several girls's centres provide workshops and seminars on topics pertaining to self-care and life balance.
If you scan this list and thought, "I had no idea", you are in all probability not alone. Such is the truth facing ladies's centres in Ontario. To borrow a selling term, these centres have bother with their "brand". Though they supply valuable services to thousands of ladies across the province each year, they're not well known, even in their own communities. They're also simply confused with different services, like women's shelters.
Several centres were established to assist abused girls (hence the association with shelters), however have expanded their range of services to help girls of all ages and backgrounds through a selection of life's challenges - divorce, loss of employment, poor self-esteem, grief, and transitions to a new community or new life situation. And they do all of this on a shoestring budget.
Funding Challenges
Like many tiny agencies, these centres lack an even and reliable funding stream that may enable them to expand and promote their program offerings. By funding several centres through the Ontario Girls's Directorate, the provincial government offers some stability. Though generous, government funding is not enough, therefore most centres depend on fundraising and donations to assist cowl costs.
In most cases, fundraising is still not enough. The amounts the centres raise are little in comparison to the need. Why- Girls's centres pay the vast majority of their budget on programs, leaving very little for selling and publicity. Without a selling budget, it is troublesome to draw in attention and fundraising bucks, especially when centres are competing against larger organizations with deeper pockets and the ability to mount massive-scale fundraisers.
With nothing to spend on flashy events, most girls's centres depend upon small fundraisers, like bake sales, walkathons, and book sales. Some run larger events, like awards ceremonies, luncheons or dinners. And most derive some funds from the nominal fees they charge for membership in the centre. Combined, these little amounts are a great help, but they're not the consistent and reliable funding that a lot of girls's centres require.
Not that a lack of funding looks to be a lot of of an impediment. Even while focused on making each penny count, the women running these centres never lose sight of their mission. They continue in their manner, quietly and while not fanfare, helping some of the foremost vulnerable folks in our communities.
That they'll give high-quality services on such a low budget shows resourcefulness, determination and ingenuity. Just imagine what these ladies might do if they'd no worries concerning funding.
