New-Gate in New England: Arduous Time Connecticut Style
Connecticut was as soon as home to America’s greatest dungeon: the mine/prison often known as New-Gate.
The very 1st state jail within the United States was based before there were states at all, not to mention united ones. Connecticut’s New-Gate Jail, initially a copper mine, was started it’s function as a detention middle within the fall of 1773 as the colony’s public “gaol” and workhouse. It was called New-Gate after the fearsome jail of the same name in England. Throughout the early years of the American Revolutionary Warfare it held captured loyalists and torries. It was also a Prisoner of Battle facility within the American Civil War.
The people of Connecticut had been no less concerned with funds over-run in the late 18th century than we're at present, so the supposed “self-sufficiency” of New-Gate was very appealing. Copper may nonetheless be mined from the dank tunnels that made up the prison, allowing prisoners to pay for their own upkeep. As well as, the structure of the jail, i.e. shafts, a couple of iron lure-doors and a veritable dungeon of mine tunnels, meant that a minimal employees can be needed. This included the warden or “Keeper” three guards or “overseers” and some skilled miners, paid from the prisoners salaries, to instruct the prisoner on the finer factors of copper mining.
Certainly such a prison was a model of effectivity and security; it’s a shame then that the very 1st prisoner escaped in less than a month.
On December 22nd of 1773, John Hinson was the 1st man incarcerated in Connecticut’s new New-Gate Prison. Little is understood about Hinson, aside from that he was 20 year-outdated and stood 5’6” tall. Even his crime has been forgotten, although it will need to have been critical; the New-Gate was reserved for burglars, horse-thieves, counterfeiters, highwaymen and different such hard-cases.
What is understood is that on January 9th John Hinson escaped, presumably utilizing his compact dimension and the vigor of youth to climb up a 70-foot properly shaft, however more most likely aided by an accomplice on the skin with a length of rope and a bit of money to bribe an overseer. One reasonably romantic (and unsubstantiated) story involves his lovely ladylove coming to his rescue. The only certainty is that if he was ever imprisoned in Connecticut once more, then these data have been lost.
Three months later three more convicts escaped, main local authorities to grudgingly admit that some type of wall could also be necessary. With the addition of a stone enclosure and a few extra guards the jail grew to become far more secure, although it by no means fairly lived up to its preliminary boast of being escape-proof.
For the subsequent 54-12 months of its operation some 800 arduous-timers lived and worked in Connecticut’s largest state-operated dungeon. It wasn’t until 1827 that the New-Gate was abandoned as a everlasting detention facility, although it did see restricted military use within the Civil War. A brand new, nominally less medieval jail was built in Wethersfield and the prisoners have been transferred there. Presumably the prisoners regarded this as an enchancment in their situation. Irrespective of how dismal the brand new prison was, no less than it wasn’t subterranean.
