Writing a novel seriously isnt something people do as they just simply want to. They must actually adore thinking about doing it so they can stick to it towards the end. If you've been thinking of writing one yourself and never got around to even starting, it's possible that you lack that spark within you or that passion that drives most untiring novelists who write after page just as if it were as easy as brushing their teeth. Basically, that wish to write your story needs to be burning deep inside you. Or else, it's probably going to remain there, buried and untold for life-long. Whether or not it is a story of love, revenge, nationalism or what have you, that story must be told, if you even conceived it in your mind. So try harder next time around while reading the following to help you put a structure to your novel-writing plans.
What you want to do first is to ask yourself what the story is. Go on and jot it down like you would write it for your own reading. Do not wory about the style or the pacing yet. What you'd like to do is to just write the backbone of your novel, including, of course, all the main characters. By main characters, we mean those who play crucial roles in the development of your story. Do not wory about the subplots yet. Simply get your main plot written down an dthink about yuour sub-plots upon having decided on the main twists and turns of your main storyline.
After you've finished establishing your plot, focus on your characterization. Enlist all of the main characters you have and beside their names, take note of a detailed description of who they are and what they play in your story. This is significant because, though you would feel like you're doing a language class exercise, you will be doing your novel good by strenghtening you rcharacters and your story. Do not forget that whatever you're telling, everything boils down to how you develop your characters. The way you tell the events is also important, but when your characterization is weak, you will not be able to achieve every novelist's goal and that is to capture the heart, mind and soul of a reader. Once you create characters which might be so strong they come alive in your readers' thoughts, that's when you know you've done a good job.
With all your main plot coming in concrete form and your characters being strongly defined, now you are ready to develop your story. Veteran novelists usually do not do any of these things once they write. They're so excellent at it they could do a fabulous job each time without any of these preliminaries. But since you are a newbie and can probably use some preparation and a push, then you can try these techniques. You could start breaking down your main story into chapters. Then you can definitely fill in each chapter with details until you end up developing each chapter naturally as you write.
Writing a novel certainly wont be easy, however when you believe in your story and you start seeing it coming to life, you can find yourself working on it and never wanting to stop until you just have to.
