Nikon Coolpix P7000 - Most Popular Camera For A Reason
If you want a digital camera for class images then the Nikon Coolpix P7000 is positively fantastic value for money. You can capture very complete images due to the 10.1 mega pixel CCD image sensor. Together with the 7.1 zoom lens and the 3-inch LCD monitor the Nikon P7000 has all it takes to get the finest pictures. This digital compact camera is a more portable, cut down SLR camera and an exceptional point and shoot camera. Even expert photographers put in a good word for the camera at this price! Let's have a look at all the features and the pros and cons of the P7000.
Dimension and Handling -- This in reality just depends on what you are looking for. If you desire a pocket camera that can fit into shirt pockets, jean pockets, etc then this is not the camera for you and you in fact should look in a different place. For me, it's the great size, not too big and not too small. The camera is solid but not too heavy.
Image quality -- I shoot mainly in RAW and the quality so far is superb. Little noise up to ISO400 and usable to ISO800. Can go to 1600 in a pinch.
Autofocus -- Focus is fast and exact. There are options for Autofocus, Macro Focus, Infinity, and Manual Focus. Be certain to read the instruction booklet and spend time understanding the focus options. Some people are reporting focus issues and I believe many are related to users not learning enough about the focus system.
Write speed -- This is where I would have given a 4 1/2 instead of a 5 if I could. JPG write speeds are good but RAW is fairly slow and doesn't appear to buffer. It doesn't affect me much based on the way I take pictures but there are times that it would be nice if it were faster. It goes without saying if you shoot JPG then this is a non-issue.
Nikon undoubtedly hasn't skimped on features for the P7000, setting out to equal or beat its major rival. It is built with a large 1/1.7-inch 10-megapixel CCD sensor (the same size and resolution as the G12), a 7.1x f/2.8-5.6 Nikkor zoom lens, equivalent to 28-200mm (the G12 has a 5x zoom f/2.8-4.5, equivalent to 28-140mm), and a 7.5cm LCD monitor with a resolution of 921,000 dots (the G12 has a 7cm 461k screen, but it is articulated).
It also offers an optical viewfinder, a full range of manual exposure controls, optical image stabilisation, a pop-up flash and 720p HD film recording. The P7000 is also competing on price naturally.
It's no surprise the P7000 takes pure images of anything with a reasonable amount of available light. Macro close-ups of flowers taken in a sunny room were first-rate. Overall, the results looked respectable and genuine. It's hard to say whether they're "superior" than the G12, since PowerShots are more vibrant (which I have a preference but that's strictly a matter of personal taste). Another plus for the P7000 is its 5-way VR (Vibration Reduction) system which does an outstanding job of reducing blur at slower shutter speeds.
Pros
A fine set of shooting-focused features; optical viewfinder and built-in neutral density filter; very good picture quality for its category; comfortable, relatively streamlined shooting design.
Customization
Battery life
Viewfinder (I don't use it too often but nice when you need it)
Image quality
Zoom range
Menus (intuitive, easy to use. Even better if you're familiar with Nikon DSLR menus.)
Works with Nikon remote and Nikon flash
Preset zoom
Cons
Have to decide on Playback button to scroll through images (I like the ability to scroll after taking a photo like the D90)
No articulating monitor (If I have to decide, I'll take the higher res LCD but every once in a while the articulating screen would come in handy).
RAW write speed (will be a bigger con for some than it is for me)
Relatively sluggish raw shooting.
Summary
In conclusion, this is a remarkable camera and I highly endorse it as long as you aren't confusing it for something it's not like a pocket P&S with inadequate controls or a full sized DSLR!!
I cannot say enough good about this camera. If you are an aspiring photographer on a budget, this camera will get you photos you cannot touch with any other Nikon Coolpix digital camera. It is simply the top of the Coolpix line. It will get you better shots than any Canon point and shoot save the G12, S95 and S100, which all rival it in some ways, come close in others, and beat it in still others.
The Coolpix P7000 is a excellent camera that lots of enthusiasts will appreciate for its intelligent shooting design, interesting feature set, and worthy image quality.
