In America, home schooling goes back to the days of the very first settlers. These settlers taught their kids at home, because schools were not available, and they needed the labor of the children to keep their farms in operation. A lot of figures that we consider well-educated were actually homeschooled. They included Benjamin Franklin, who is known as a father of our country. John Wesley, was also home educated, founder of the Methodist movement. The famous author, Charles Dickens was home educated as was Alexander Graham Bell. These people never thought anything about it as it was a normal part of life.
Modern home schooling traces its roots back to the 1970s. One of the founding fathers of the new home schooling movement was Ivan Illich, who saw schools producing individuals who saw learning as a noun rather than a verb. He believed that learning should be a life long activity that should be done as needs arise. His first book, Deschooling Society, called for the end of formal education as it was made by governments that could not afford to run them.
Charles E, another contributor to the home schooling movement, during the 1970s. Silverman, who wrote Crisis in the Classroom: The Remaking of American Education. The book which resulted from a study paid for by the Carnegie Foundation found that America was not doing a good job of educating our children. He found schools to be in disorder and the future to be very bleak.
In 1970's, a third leader in the formation of the home schooling movement of the was John Holt, who wrote Instead of Education: Ways to Help People Do Things Better. He worked in education for a lot of years, before finding schools irrelevant. He then went on to explore the difference between babies and ten years olds, finding that schools produced frightened children who were educated to look out only for themselves. Mr. Holt went on to start the first home schooling magazine. This magazine was significantl to connecting home schooling parents to each other.
For home schooling parents, the second magazine was also equally important in connecting families together. It was called Home Education Magazine and was started by Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore in 1983. For home schooling, they developed a set of courses. The formula encourages the student to learn at their own maturity level without a set amount of time to study. The formula also persuades the student to engage in manual work. Doing something for others each day is the third aspect of the formula.
