Baja is more than white sandy beaches. There is a lot more to do than bronze yourself in the sun while catching up on your summer reading. You can do that anywhere.
The Baja Peninsula does offer those white sandy beaches and to-die-for spas. There is the ocean to cool off in, to scuba under and to snorkel in a semi-submerged state. The waters are clear and warm. There are still so many other attractions to Baja than the water, sand and spas that you must keep an open mind when planning your trip there.
Shake the sand out of your shorts and spend a day hiking through one of Baja's many mountain trails. Resorts offer hiking and safari trips that go deep into the heart of Baja's dense and gorgeous forests. The views along the way make for tremendous photo-ops. The food alone will be worth a picture or two.
Visit the massive Boca de Sierra Biosphere Reserve to get your adrenaline racing. Take a tour through the canopy. Zip line instructors take tourists on a high altitude adventure over vast canyons. Tour the whole park as you whiz through the air!
And that's not all, folks. There are natural rock walls to climb to test your strength against your friends'. Race them across a span of rope bridges draped over the lush landscape. There are many guides available to keep you from doing something overly risky while you play.
The ocean is for more than simply splashing around and swimming. Baja's animals are at your fingertips! Become one with nature while you mingle with dolphins or friendly gray whales. In the winter, you can see migrating humpback whales breaching the surface right in front of you!
Consider a deep sea fishing expedition. Baja is famous for its sport fishing. Expert fisherman will take you to the best spots to catch your limit of yellow fin tuna, roosterfish, marlin, bonito or sail fish. The tuna in this area can weigh in at a robust 25 pounds.
Now that you have had your fishing expedition, it's time to explore the sea in a glass bottom kayak. This is a fun and easy way to see the variety of flamboyant undersea creatures so abundant in Baja waters. Don't miss the sea lions, marine birds and other creatures abounding in the area.
You also wouldn't want to miss the rich culture of the region. Take a two hour or so trip to the lovely town of Todos Santos during their Art Festival days. You can view local paintings, sculpture, ceramics and arts and crafts of all types, all handmade. You will not find these anywhere else in the world. There will also be performers engaged in traditional dances to the rhythms of local bands and singers. Todos Santos, for you Eagles fans, is also home of the famous Hotel California, perhaps the biggest of the bands many hits. It is really the Mexican culture that makes the town so worth a long visit.
Local festivals are a great way to immerse yourself into the culture. Try different native dishes like smoked marlin tacos, homemade pastries and wines, and fresh fish ceviche. Native artisans sell handmade crafts you can't find anywhere else in the world. You might need an extra suitcase just to store your souvenirs!
Don't eat at the hotel wherever you are. Take a side trip and find some tasty street food or small café. Don't worry about finding the right place to eat, the long lines are a dead giveaway of the quality and flavor of the food being served.
After that exhilarating, exhausting day you just had, you deserve a fine meal. Baja may be the only place where you can dine on a tremendous meal and then ride a camel to the surf. I told you there was more to the Baja Peninsula than sand. After a day like you just had, though, maybe lying on the sand listening to the pounding waves of the deep blue sea may sound like heaven.
