In the beginning, the only internet users were government agencies. Today everyone in the world is a user. Where there used to be one or two televisions in every home now there are those plus one or two computers. Laptops are carried around like wallets. Today's internet is not just for luxury lovers or geeks. We use it everyday for everyday things like shopping, talking to friends, or for reference like we used to use an encyclopedia.

The internet is invaluable for students of any age and any subject. The internet makes research a breeze. No more do we go through a library's card catalog with its high learning curve just to understand or dusty cracked old microfiche which may or may not be viewable. Now we google.

Most people past the age of 30 recall researching reports in the library with a three foot high stack of books by their side. Some of us had parents then that actually typed on a typewriter…with a ribbon and carbon paper.

Oh my, what a different world it is that we live in now. Home computers in many cases are used to earn the family income or to do work brought home from the office, which also sports a computer on the desk of every worker.

The internet has revolutionized the world as much as the printing press did centuries ago. We can now stay at home with our small children and work on our computers and/or begin a successful business without getting dressed and leaving home. Probably the biggest revolution, though, is our easy access to a sea of information. For better or worse, information on every subject is out there for the taking.

The search engines such as Yahoo, Bing and Google take us wherever we want to go. Sometimes they stray away a little from the target, but usually they hit it right in the bull's eye. One can easily check on the symptoms of a child that appears ill and determine whether a doctor's intervention is required or not. While the internet is certainly not a diagnostic tool it allows the user to make an intelligent decision.

The internet can be a powerful tool when it comes to social politics, too. Just Google "the Day of Rage on January 25, 2011." You'll see how it ignited the Egyptian revolution. And, of all places, it originated on a Facebook page. Before the internet came about it would have taken months to reach an entire country without appearing on TV. Now, it takes only seconds. Without out a doubt, the internet's power is mighty and far-reaching.

The majority of us are so inured to having access to the net no matter where we are that we forget what life was like without it. The internet gives us unbelievable freedom in any number of ways. It can be used for good purposes like teaching, sharing information and any form of communication. We can shop for anything, organize a world revolution, or help put a stop to prejudices and superstitions all over the world as our understanding of different peoples, countries and their cultures grow enormously. Let us all use the power of the internet for good rather than evil. This is its true calling and ours.
