Slate Steps And Sills Are Easier Than You Might Think

It really does seem like the days are long gone, at least for now, when you could count on a "natural inflation" to increase the value of your home. When a person could buy a property then just watch it go up in value as time passed by.

So now there's just no getting around the fact, and that is that if you plan on selling your home for a profit further down the road when housing sales figures do finally pick up, you're going to have to do some type of improvements on it. So ask any realtor and he or she will tell you that just like so many other things in life, first impressions really do count when you're trying to sell your home. What this means is that the front door and the steps up to it can play a definite role in the decision-making process for a potential buyer. This in turn, it turns out is why increasing numbers of do-it-yourselfers are relying on slate slabs as the answer for quick and easy upgrades. Not just on their front steps either but for any steps, and sills around the home where the goal is a completely "new look".

So then why slate when there are just so many other surface covering materials out there to choose from? As it turns out there's several answers to that question but the first one that you can easily picture with your "mind's eye", is that slate slabs tend to be thinner. Much thinner than so many other commonly used surface covering materials, such as brick or stone. So for instance with stairs going with slate means that the new surface will have minimal effect on the "rise and the run" of the actual stair treads. Thinner material means that there's also no height problem where the top deck meets the raised front door jam.

Slate slabs also have "no finished edges" like you find on ceramic tiles, and even brick. No finished edges means that you're free to cut it wherever you want, and install it however you see fit. Take a look at a ceramic tile for instance and you'll see that all four outer edges are contoured, and manufactured to be the finished edge. You simply can't cut a tile in half and then butt it up to another tile because that cut edge won't look right. This is extremely, limiting particularly for someone with minimal experience installing resurfacing materials.

Take a look at a slate slab on the other hand, and you'll see that just like a piece of plywood for instance, you can "cut it anywhere" and then run the cut edges right up against one another, so slicing cut to fit pieces of stock for stairs, and sills is no problem at all. Then yet one more item to take into account, is the vast selection of colors and textures in slate slabs that are available now because it numbers in the thousands. "Literally thousands" of choices that you have in colors, and textures means that you'll have no trouble finding the perfect fit for the existing colors, materials, and designs in and around the project you're working on. Then the last thing worth noting here, is that slate slabs are surprisingly easy work with. You can cut them with a common circular saw fitted with a diamond masonry blade that you could buy at your local hardware store. Then it's super easy to apply using common tile adhesive that you can also find premixed in tubs at your local hardware store.
