Overview

Domain names have been described as being the 21st century’s answer to real estate – and probably with good reason. Many quiet, unassuming individuals who purchased domain names on a whim many years’ ago are now making their fortunes by selling on domain names they have kept in their possession for so long, often just paying an annual $10 or so fee for parking a domain – and continuing to do so until the time seemed right to sell. Revenue from these sales has turned sellers into millionaires practically overnight, with possibly the biggest payout ever seen going to the domain name ‘toys.com’ which was purchased without a quibble by the toy firm Toys R Us. You can read more details of the money to be made from parking a domain a bit later in this article.

Changes in 2010

Increases in the numbers of domain names available can only be good news to the many Domainers who spend their time buying up hundreds, if not thousands, of domain names to add to their portfolios. As such, 2010 is likely to see a feeding frenzy as the internet opens up to a much broader database of domain names. The Latin scripts’ conquest of the internet could soon be over when, by June or July of 2010 we are likely to see Arabic, Cyrillic and Chinese domain names becoming popular on the internet. This is actually an important move towards unity and parity – after all, the internet is supposedly global so, to create a genuinely universal address system that connects every computer in the world with any other, is the obvious solution.

When parking a domain, this change is important because one of the first alterations will be to those codes supposedly operated by national governments – such as ‘.co.uk’. For the Domainers, this is good news as the numbers of domains available will increase dramatically, providing them with many new markets to dominate. Domain security is going to be the biggest headache as the introduction of non Latin alphabets can lead to a rich breeding ground for phishing fraudsters.

Revenue from your Domain Name

Domain Name Journal, a publication that has been tracking domain names since 2003, has printed a list of the most expensive domain names to be sold – and ‘toys.com’ is not alone by any stretch of the imagination. Any domain names with similarly generic names attract particularly large keyword searches which are what makes them such an attractive proposition. The editor of Domain Name Journal estimates that had ‘toys.com’ been sold at any time other than in a recession, it would have commanded as much as $7 $8 million. As it was, when this domain name sold early in 2009, its original owner collected a cool $5.1 million – and this was a cash sale!

Not all of us can acquire such lucrative domain names, no matter how long we pay for parking a domain. The advantage to this particular domain name was its value in long tail keywords, potential attracting thousands of hits per day amongst the search engines. So, parking a domain can be particularly lucrative business for those far sighted individuals who purchased at the right time. However, before you become finger happy and decide to purchase ‘sex.com’ – make sure you have about $12.5 million plus at hand to pay for it!
